Beyond the Classroom: A Visit to Outdoor Education

For more than 900 PLCS sixth graders, fall brings a different kind of classroom experience, one filled with nature, exploration and hands-on discovery.

Each year, the PLCS Foundation team visits Outdoor Education at Carol Joy Holling Camp to see the program in action. It's one of our favorite traditions and an opportunity to experience firsthand a program we're proud to help make possible.

This fall, we spent the day with sixth graders from La Vista West Elementary as they kicked off their Outdoor Education experience. We followed along as students investigated the pond, explored the butterfly garden and practiced their archery skills. Along the way, our team had a chance to participate in a few activities, too!

Where Learning Comes to Life

Outdoor Education takes familiar classroom concepts and gives students the opportunity to experience them in a new setting.

At the pond, students become scientists, testing water samples and gathering information they'll continue studying long after their visit. In the garden, they get an up-close look at the relationship between plants and pollinators, reinforcing concepts from their science curriculum.

The learning extends beyond science, too. Through activities like archery and group challenges, students practice patience, communication and working toward shared goals.

Whether they're examining an ecosystem or mastering a new skill, students are gaining experiences that build on what they've learned throughout the school year.

An Opportunity for Every Sixth Grader

The PLCS Foundation provides funding to ensure every PLCS sixth grader has the opportunity to participate in Outdoor Education. This year alone, that support will reach more than 900 students across the district.

For our team, visiting Outdoor Education is about more than seeing the program we've helped fund. It's about watching students make discoveries, overcome challenges and experience learning in a completely different way.

We're grateful to Mr. Klug for showing us around camp and sharing updates about the program, as well as the dedicated PLCS educators who bring these experiences to life each year.

We're already looking forward to our next visit!
