La Vista Middle School Conversation Garden
We are raising funds to establish a “conversation garden” at La Vista Middle school. This will provide a space for students to foster in-person relationships away from the influence of social media.
Middle school students are dealing with stress and pressures at increasing levels. Middle school years are a time of change and transition. They are facing new societal pressures, while afforded new privileges and freedoms. They face the burdens of fitting in, caring what others think of them, judgment, and bullying. The explosion of social media and its contributions on behaviors, stress, and pressures also impact youth at this vulnerable age. It’s no wonder that mental health problems, including anxiety and depression begin at or are exacerbated at this age.
Primary Goals:
- Encourage connection with peers and nature
- Mitigate the negative effects of social media on middle schoolers' self-esteem
- Increase resilience and reduce anxiety levels among this demographic
Concept:
The Conversation Garden, located at LaVista Middle School, would feature various plants and seating areas for small to medium-sized groups.
Primary features include:
- Sensory plants, native grasses, and trees
- Variety of seating and gathering spaces
- Physical activities and small-group games
The venue could also serve as a space for school counselors or after-school programs to address mental health topics and coping strategies.
Sponsorship Opportunities:
