4th Grade Pioneer Days

Pioneer Days is a field trip that gives all 4th grade students in the district the opportunity to experience a re-created, one-room schoolhouse in the heart of the Papillion La Vista community. The PLCS Foundation provided funds so the historic Portal School could be revived allowing students to connect to the lives of the pioneer studied in the 4th grade curriculum.

Students and teachers are encouraged to dress in pioneer attire and even bring lunch pails that authenticate the experience. Papillion La Vista teachers, the Papillion Area Historical society, law enforcement, and other community members volunteer hours of their time to create a memorable experience for students. For these 4th graders, the words from their history books come to life in reenactments, story time, and tours of the Old Portal School, the historic John Sautter house, and the original Sarpy County Courthouse.
